I had two photographers who became the main influences for my work. The first is a man called Erwan Frotin who was born in France and is Franco-Swiss. He was the first photographer that I found when looking to see if anyone had used a similar style to me. His work really spoke to me and made me realise that this route was definitely one I wanted to go down.

These images were seen as turning ‘culinary photography on its head’. These really stand out to me as I previously stated food photography rarely has its generic structure played with and modified so to see it done with such professionalism shown me that it could be done and published. It is obvious to see that the photos shown above challenge what we expect to see from food photography as the food within the frame are not seen as these desirable objects like they usually are and instead I feel that they’re rather uncomfortable to look and especially when you’re so used to seeing pristine images of luscious that make them enticing.
The second photographer that really influenced my work is a young Italian man called Alessio Franceschetto. His work, much like Erwan’s, focused a lot on culinary photography and turning it on its head however where his differed was that he uses a lot of none food objects in his work that is either used instead of certain parts of food or to mimic food altogether. His work has a lot more pops of colour and techniques to make the subjects in the images stand out. He follows many connotations of generic photography however he changes main aspects such as the food itself.
It is clear to see how he has used his own flair to bend the connotations of culinary photography. Out of my two influences, I would say that mine follows the general idea of Alessio’s more as mine also includes bright colours and objects alongside the food to make you question the images and have to look at the images multiple times to realise the changes.
